The European Chemicals Agency's Risk Assessment and Socio-Economic Analysis Committee has received a report from France proposing restrictions on the use of lead and fumaric acid in certain products, including jewelry, furniture, and footwear, which are intended for production or distribution within the European market. The report specifically addresses the limitation of dimethyl ester content, aiming to reduce potential health risks associated with these substances.
Regarding lead, the French report—referred to as Annex XV—has recommended imposing stricter limits on the presence of lead and its compounds in jewelry, aligning with the broader framework of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations. This proposed restriction would prohibit the manufacture and sale of all types of jewelry in Europe, whether precious or fashion-oriented, for adults or children, if the rate of lead migration exceeds 0.09 micrograms per square centimeter per hour.
French authorities have expressed significant concerns about the potential health impacts of lead exposure, particularly among children. They highlight that when children chew or swallow jewelry, they may be exposed to lead, which can lead to serious neurological damage.
