At the inaugural Chinese Knitting Expo held in Shanghai back in 2003, a unique type of clothing made primarily from soybean protein fiber caught the attention of both domestic and international investors. This fabric feels as soft as cotton yet boasts a natural silk-like sheen and drape. Derived from soybean residues after protein extraction, this fiber represents an exclusive technological innovation in the field of textile applications. Today, as soybean fiber continues to gain recognition, what are its standout qualities, and how does the industry perceive its future? Can everyday consumers afford garments made from this material?
Soybean fiber combines the best attributes of several well-known fibers: it feels akin to cashmere, shines like silk, breathes like cotton, and provides warmth similar to wool. With rising living standards, people are increasingly discerning about the textiles they use for clothing. While cotton is comfortable, it lacks refinement; silk, though elegant, wrinkles easily; cashmere is luxurious but costly and unsuitable for summer wear; rayon may feel cool but can cause irritation; and synthetic fibers, though crisp, often irritate the skin. Soybean fiber addresses these shortcomings effectively.
When blended with other textiles, soybean fiber produces remarkable results. Mixed with cotton, it enhances smoothness and draping ability; combined with wool or hemp, it reduces itching; paired with cashmere, it boosts warmth while cutting costs; blended with silk, it becomes wrinkle-resistant and non-sticky; and mixed with various chemical fibers, it creates fabrics with diverse textures. Impressively, 100 kilograms of soybean meal can yield 40 kilograms of protein fiber. Currently, the production cost of soybean fiber is approximately one-third that of silk and one-fifteenth that of cashmere, slightly more expensive than cotton. As the manufacturing process evolves, costs are expected to drop further. Consequently, soybean fiber clothing should remain reasonably priced, making it accessible to the average consumer.
To date, we've successfully introduced a range of soybean fiber end products. Our "Tian Rong" line of adult clothing hit the market in 2009, followed by the "Yuan Xiu" line of maternity and infant wear, both renowned for unparalleled comfort and health benefits. These products have garnered significant media coverage, including from Phoenix TV and CCTV, as well as the attention and support of government officials at various levels. In honor of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, soybean fiber apparel was selected as a "diplomatic gift" by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, representing a "Made in China" landmark product for international friends.
This innovative fiber not only enriches the textile industry but also underscores China's commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly innovations. As more people discover the benefits of soybean fiber, its popularity is poised to grow, promising a bright future for both producers and consumers alike.
