Yay, Kids Clothes Week is finally here! But as life tends to do, it got pretty hectic, and I didn't manage to get any prep work done. Instead of throwing in the towel before the week even started, I wanted to share some super quick and easy sewing patterns that you can whip up in just a couple of hours. For me, KCW is the perfect opportunity to fill in the gaps in my kids' wardrobes with some essential pieces. Fast and straightforward is usually the way to go for me.
If you're new to Kids Clothes Week, be sure to check out Meg Freeman's post from last week to learn more about it.
Oliver + S is famous for its intricate and unique children's clothing designs, but did you know we also offer some fantastic basic patterns? These are simple patterns with just a few pieces that you can sew up in no time while still creating high-quality garments. With a little focus, you might even be able to buy, print, tape, cut, and sew one of these during your naptime or a quiet evening!
One of the fastest shirts you can sew is the Field Trip Raglan Tee. Since the sleeves are straight, there's no easing involved, making it super quick. You can easily modify it by shortening the sleeves for warmer weather or keeping them long for cooler seasons. Upcycling old t-shirts and using their existing hems can make this project even faster—these tees take me about half an hour each. If you prefer not to guess at sleeve lengths, our School Bus Tee pattern includes both long and short sleeve options, leaving you time for fun embellishments like kid-friendly art projects. Best of all, both patterns are unisex!
Another quick project is View A of our Roller Skate Dress, or View C if you'd rather make a tunic. It only has three pattern pieces: front, back, and a button loop. Even though it’s fully lined, it sews up surprisingly fast. I've made several of these dresses, and they're my daughter's go-to outfit all year round. Pair them with leggings in the fall for a cute and cozy look.
If you're looking for something a bit more stylish, the Hopscotch Top + Dress is a bit more involved than a basic T-shirt but offers so much more flair. This pattern is perfect for those warm summer nights when your little one needs a comfy nightgown.
For babies, the Lullaby Layette pants are super simple with just two main pieces and a waistband. Made from linen, they’re ideal for summer, or you can roll them up for a casual beach vibe.
For older kids, the Playtime Leggings are a quick way to add layering pieces, and with Liesl’s tutorial, you can easily transform them into playground shorts for summer.
The Swingset Skirt requires a bit more effort than your standard "sew a rectangle and add elastic" design, but it’s still a breeze to sew. The adorable bow on the side makes this skirt one of her favorites, and it’s a great way to showcase a fun print. Plus, it only takes less than a yard of fabric to make, up to size 5!
And don’t forget about our free patterns! Lazy Days Skirts, Sunny Day Shorts, Popover Sundresses, and even Reversible Bucket Hats are all excellent wardrobe additions and quick to sew during KCW.
Alright, folks, if you commit to just one hour a day for a week, your kids will be set for the entire season. You can do it!
So, what’s your favorite “quick and easy†pattern? Have you ever timed yourself while sewing? Let me know—I’d love to hear from you!
